Elke Eckstein has been replaced as CEO of struggling Altis Semiconductor, based in Corbeil-Essonnes, France. The replacement of Eckstein by Jean-Paul Beisson was effective as of September 1, according to a brief statement on the Altis company website.
Eckstein had been CEO at Altis for three years, while the Joint Venture fab of IBM and Infineon has struggled to be cost competitive with Asian rivals. This is largely due to the fact that only 75 percent of the fab is utilized, helping push costs 30 percent higher than competitors, according to statements made by the company earlier in the year. Altis was also handed the task by the JV partners to commercialize MRAM devices.
AMD has now announced that Eckstein will join the company to manage the day-to-day operations of AMD's Fab 30, as well as overseeing the facility convert from 200mm production to 300mm, in the new guise as Fab 38. She will report directly to Hans Deppe, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of AMD Dresden, Germany.
"With tremendous industry experience in semiconductor technology and manufacturing, Elke brings the necessary skills and expertise to provide continued leadership at Fab 30 and drive a smooth transition to 300 millimeter production," stated Deppe.
Eckstein started her career with Siemens Semiconductor, which later became Infineon, holding a variety of executive roles including research and development responsibility for their Dresden-based manufacturing facility. She also held executive roles in product and technology at ProMOS Technologies in Taiwan and a former JV with Infineon and Mosel Vitelic of Taiwan.
Beisson has replaced Eckstein at Altis to continue plans put in place to make the company financially viable.
